A former cop will spend his life in prison | Local news

CAIRO – A former Whigham cop charged with more than 30 crimes related to sex crimes is now a convicted sex offender and will spend his life behind bars without parole.

Demetrio Aiello, 53, will serve three consecutive life sentences, as well as 20 years, at the Georgia Department of Corrections.

The allegations first surfaced in early June 2019, and through further investigation, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified three underage victims of Aiello who were sexually assaulted from 2011 to 2017.

In July 2019, he was charged with 32 counts of incest, aggravated pedophilia, attraction of a child for indecent ends, aggravated sexual violence and pedophilia.

After 10 months of service as a Whigham Police Officer from 2002, Aiello was asked to resign or be fired due to reports of unsafe actions at work, according to the Whigham Police Chief, Tony Black.

South Georgia Judicial District Attorney Joe Mulholland was pleased with the sentence, especially for the victims abused by Aiello.

“He’s just a monster,” he said. “So making sure he could never do it again was definitely something we were hoping to achieve and thanks to the judge’s sentence we were able to do it and we’re very happy about it.”
