Austin Muslims celebrate end of Ramadan with Eid toy drive

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close, devout Muslims around the world prepare for the celebration of Eid. The holiday is marked by a special morning prayer, gifts and parties with family and friends.

For new Muslim residents of the Austin area, a group of local nonprofits have teamed up to make this first Eid celebration in the city one to remember.

More than 70 people donated money for Eid gifts for children aged from infancy to 18 years old. On Saturday, volunteers gathered to pack toys for the new refugees, distributing them to single parents, sexual assault survivors and other vulnerable families.

“We really wanted to bring joy to children for the holidays and bring them toys and let them be children again,” said Muna Marawi, a toy collection volunteer. “They went through so much hardship and conflict.”

The celebration of Eid depends on the lunar calendar and when a new moon is sighted each year. This year’s holiday will be observed on Monday.
