blog Gistlover and the threat of social media | The Guardian Nigeria News

One of the greatest revolutions of the latter part of the 20th century was the evolution of the Internet which greatly democratized the dissemination of information. The early part of the 21st century saw the rise of social media that dislodged traditional media from the secular collection and dissemination of media information that they had been doing for centuries. He made just about anyone with a smartphone and internet data a reporter.

The internet can be a real tool for positivity, innovation and healthy living, but it contains a poisoned chalice: the tendency for vile abuse. Besides the many benefits of the internet and social media, many Nigerians, due to the difficult economic situation, find help on the internet, especially as they make jokes with other users, listen to news and receive information, ranging from current affairs, sports and more specifically gossip.

Nigerians’ thirst for gossip on the internet has given rise to a litany of gossip blogs both on mainstream web pages and associated social media apps like Instagram and Facebook. Gossip blogs have become a gold mine. People like Linda Ikeji, Stella Dimorkorkus, Instablog have made their fortunes on gossip as they litter the social media web space with never-before-seen information about public figures, politicians, music and TV stars. , among others.

Guess, innuendo is packed for the ever-ready readers who have made gossip news a daily tonic. While some of the innuendos produced end up being true or partly true, much of these claims have not been proven to date, with no one batting an eyelid. Or let me say some of the defendants just don’t want to waste their time defending or suing bloggers because that would be like fighting in the dirty mud. Whichever way it appears, the story would gain some form of legitimacy, no matter how bogus it was, because no action was taken.

There is a propaganda law often attributed to the Nazi Minister of Information and Locus Classicus in Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, which says, “Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth. Without refuting the times the stories on these blogs come true, in many cases the intent of this gossip is far from lofty. The infamous Wizkid vs. Linda Ikeji hubbub years ago cannot be hastily forgotten.

Gistlovers Blog, also known as “Seat of Wawulence” is a social media platform that uses Instagram as its primary web platform. Over the years, it has become popular with high profile personalities, the guesswork and gossip of celebrities and high ranking public figures.

The Instagram blog has reported stories from many public figures and is famous for the phrase “I come in peace” while distributing toxic vituperations on people’s personal lives. The blog seeks to break into the interior chambers of well-known personalities, revealing leaked information to the public, in the process of intruding on their privacy. Although some of the disclosures are not illegal actions of said personalities, the blog has given itself the moral compass to judge personal human actions.

From 2Face, Annie Idibia’s spit to the RudeBoy family’s issues against Anita Okoye, the blog has driven the wedge over family and domestic disputes, choosing to “pour more fuel” into the fire in cases that can be repaired. The leak of Prince Kpokpogri’s vocal note, the deadlock of the Tonto Dikeh-Janemena sex tape are all issues that have made the blog very famous, and of course for toxic reasons.

Singer Tiwa Savage had claimed in an interview that a blackmailer was in possession of a private sex tape she had with her lover and claimed that she would not accede to the blackmailer’s monetary demands; she further challenged the blackmailer to release the band as she would not comply with the whims and whims of said blackmailer. Weeks after the complaint, a taped sex video of less than 10 seconds of the singer flooded the internet, sparking tones of backlash and it was a messy week for the crooner “Eminado”.

Tiwa Savage took full responsibility for the video and called Gistlover about the incident, with the latter gloating over the incident. The “somebody son” singer informed the audience that Gistlover was her blackmailer and posted a rant that the blog hates her. She further went to let the audience know how she had changed the narrative.

According to Teebillz’s ex-wife, Gistlover was not happy with the way she reacted to the whole saga regarding her leaked video with the blogger threatening to beat her wherever they met in public. Taking to her Instastory, she called Gistlover and that may be one of the reasons Instagram deleted the Gistlovers account.

She wrote: ‘You hated how I was able to control the narrative and get ahead of a story before it consumes me and how I am able to joke on stage about something that you thought should destroy me and shame me. “You must bang my head when you see me differently… Gistloversblog africa With my full chest.

From Tiwa Savage’s post, one could infer that Gistlover threatened to release the tape to the public following her performance “Eko on Show” and could be a major culprit as the tape subsequently found its way to the Internet.

From Gistlover’s Instagram posts, the blog had repeatedly threatened to post leaked voice notes and nude videos of well-known personalities and as a result of tweeting, Jane Mena alleged an internet sex tape, the blogger claimed that the internet video was fake. and not that of Jane Mena, while further promising her many fans to release the original video if Jane Mena is not careful, which the blog claims to be in her possession.

Gistlover’s actions not only crossed the line of decency, they went against the country’s existing laws. The blog by its actions is guilty of blackmail and invasion of privacy which is a crime under the constitutions. The blog by its own posts has shown that it can threaten others (as in the case of Jane Mena) to maintain certain labels or that it would expose the person’s private actions. There is surely a law on the protection of privacy.

Gistlover and some other gossip blogs, while they entertain their teeming followers with a daily dose of essential gossip, are poisonous mercenaries who shouldn’t be allowed to have a hold in a society backed by law. Security agencies should urgently, via intelligence channels, find the owner of this toxic Instagram account, unmask him and prosecute the person for blackmail, invasion of privacy and extortion. Similar actions should be extended to other toxic blogs.

Gistlover’s action is what prompted some media players to call for tighter social media regulations so that they don’t burn the country down, irreparably destroy relationships among other bitter pills. Some regulators have advised the government to adopt the Chinese model for regulating social media. While this writer does not take sides for or against social media regulation as that is not the purpose of this article and discussion for another day, there must be some form of reason in its use in order for it to be it does not end up as a threat despite its avalanche of blessings.
