BSV launches PCOS awareness campaign
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that causes the ovaries to enlarge and the development of small cysts on the outer edges. The cause (s) of PCOS can be a combination of environmental, lifestyle, or genetic factors. BSV called in experts to help better understand this.
PCOS is a common condition associated with an imbalance of female sex hormones, which can lead to many symptoms like irregular periods, excessive hair on the face, etc. “A diagnosis of PCOS is almost always associated with the assumption that getting pregnant will be a challenge. PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility ”, Dr Vandana hegde, Clinical Director – Hegde Fertility, Hyderabad, said. “In fact, 50 percent of women who have difficulty conceiving have PCOS.” The signs and symptoms of PCOS usually appear in late adolescence or early adulthood, she points out. They may include:
- Excessive hair growth on the face or other areas, which is usually typical of men.
- Thinning hair on the scalp.
- Oily skin or severe acne.
- Skin tags on the neck or underarms.
- Patches of thick, dark skin, especially on the neck, groin, or under the breasts.
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight.
- High levels of insulin in the blood.
PCOS and infertility
For infertility caused by PCOS, treatment involves correcting ovulation problems and addressing metabolic problems, such as insulin resistance. “There are treatments to help ovulate and conceive,” said Dr Richa jagtap, clinical director, NOVA IVF Fertility, Chembur, Bombay adds. “It can also be used to help regulate menstrual cycles and provide protection against endometriosis in women with irregular periods associated with PCOS.” Maintaining a healthy weight can help regulate periods and control blood sugar. “A healthy, balanced diet and regular physical activity are essential,” she says.
“Having PCOS doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant. PCOS is one of the most common but treatable causes of infertility in women. In women with PCOS, the hormonal imbalance interferes with the growth and release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation). So the key to successful conception is to start treatment early, ”advises Dr. Jagtap.
Dr. Rajul tyagi, Clinical Director – Javitri Hospital & Test Tube Baby Center, Lucknow mentions that currently There’s no cure for PCOS, but it can be managed well. Treatment for PCOS differs from person to person, but mainly consists of drugs for ovarian stimulation, drugs to sensitize insulin, or surgery. Most women with PCOS who are treated with a short course of medication are able to get pregnant. There is no one standard treatment plan that can work for all women with PCOS who are considering pregnancy.
“The fertility specialist will look at various factors before deciding on a treatment plan. These factors include age, symptoms, cause of infertility, personal desire to continue to try other pathways for conception, and and lastly, the cost of the treatment. Doctors may prescribe different treatments such as In Vitio Fertilization (IVF) depending on the particular case. Talk to your doctor to find out if IVF is the best option for you, “advises Dr Tyagi.
