Do you remember the first time you saw Cameron Diaz on screen? his beginnings The mask (1994) was a smash hit, but believe it or not I missed that one in theaters despite being a weekly moviegoer then. I saw her for the first time in The wedding of my best friend (1997) a quickly loved film although I can’t say she was my focal point. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how deftly she navigated a tricky part…

In the basic model of romantic comedy, the significant other “obstacle”, the one in the way of our lead role’s happy ending, sits somewhere on the spectrum between an unexciting jerk or an outright villain who is actively wrong for the protagonist’s object of affection. The wedding of my best friend was a big mainstream hit, but it somehow managed to be just that without compromise; it’s actually a subversive twist on the genre, without pulling his punches or winking at the camera about how he plays with the formula.

Cameron Diaz surprises in “My best friend’s wedding”, refusing to be “the obstacle to human form”

We are far enough into the narrative before realizing that somehow we are rooting versus the protagonist Jules (Julia Roberts). Maybe she doesn’t deserve the happy ending she originally imagined? She will have to look in the mirror and adjust her dreams. The object of her affection (Dermot Mulroney) and this human-shaped obstacle (Cameron Diaz as Kimmy) are actually doing just fine…even just right one for the other.

While I pride myself on having an eagle eye for rising stars and their talent/valor, I admit I was extremely late for the Diaz train, only coming to the Aughts with that boost to 180° between his vertiginous performative joy in charlie’s angels and his despised wife mentally unstable in Vanilla sky.

What was your experience with Cameron Diaz? Are you thrilled that she is actually going back to work. Despite his retirement after these three cinematic years in 2014 (Annie, the other woman, sex tape), she finally returns to the cinema with the title judiciously Back to action opposite Jamie Foxx which will presumably begin filming later this year.

PS On Instagram (please follow) is testing a quick new “5 x 5” series highlighting five key roles in an actor’s career, so we’re launching it with Cameron Diaz.
