When we first meet Drive my car Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), he is mounting a production of Samuel Beckett’s absurd tragicomedy Waiting for Godot, a play that follows two men who anticipate the arrival of an enigmatic and ineffable character named Godot, who never ends up showing his face. May be Godot is a work on uncertainty, disappointment, madness; or maybe it is hope, or God, or war. The truth is, during his lifetime Beckett refused to provide a definitive answer to what Godot really represents, and now, 30 years after his death, the question remains in our minds.

But, let’s face it: this elusive character is exactly what’s so fun about the play. Godot is a transformer. A chrysalis full of possibilities. A Freudian ideal that says so much more about its audience than about itself or someone else. And for Yusuke, Godot represents the possibility of telling stories. Storytelling is an integral part of Yusuke’s life. He of course plays a big role in his successful career as a stage director, and he even goes to great lengths to exploit the possibilities of the medium by staging multilingual versions of classical works. But storytelling is also the main connective tissue between him and his wife, TV screenwriter Oto (Reika Kirishima), who weaves fantastic threads while they have sex, drawing closer to a fully developed story with each encounter. . When Oto unexpectedly dies one night from a brain aneurysm, Yusuke’s relationship to storytelling changes dramatically. He is no longer GodotIt’s Vladimir or Tarragon, standing on a country road, brimming with possibilities. Instead, he now only knows how to look back: return to the idyllic life he had with his wife who was shattered by an untimely death, and to the questions he never asked her about his lovers. secrets.

And so, two years later, Yusuke decides to stage an adaptation of the realistic play by Anton Tchekhov. Uncle Vanya, the pivot takes on its full meaning as a reflection of the trajectory of his career as a narrator. Vania follows a quartet whose intertwined lives lead the main character to become hyper-aware of his own mortality and regrets. In this direction, Vania is sort of the inverse of Godot– the first being a story permanently turned backwards, while the second looks forward with curiosity.

Yusuke’s new relationship with his own existence doesn’t just manifest through his art. Before he starts to repeat Vania in Hiroshima, the company he works with assigns him a driver to bring him back and forth in his beloved bright red Saab. The driver in question is Misaki Watari (Toko Miura), a low-key young woman with whom, despite Yusuke’s initial resistance, he discovers a real connection. As the two pass through Hiroshima, they discuss their one-on-one relationship with the loss. Yusuke tells Misaki about the death of his wife and, a few decades before, the death of their young daughter. Misaki tells Yusuke about her abusive mother, whom she left to die when their house was crushed in a landslide, a choice she now deeply regrets.

In a film rich in scenes and productions, the Saab turns out to be the centerpiece. It should be noted here that the Haruki Murakami short story that the film is based on takes place almost entirely within the confines of this car. Where Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s adaptation weaves into episodic meditations on our protagonist’s home and professional life, Marukami allows all the information necessary for us to understand Yusuke – and for Yusuke to understand himself – to manifest in the form of ‘a conversation with a relative stranger.

Whichever form it takes, it’s an odd choice, by any means, to have a story about infidelity, loss, and creation so clearly centered on a simple ride. This is exactly where Godot reappears in the film’s narrative. Like Drive my car progressing, the Saab inadvertently begins to portray a new Godot-like character to our struggling protagonist, allowing his life to take on a new form within its walls, just as the very idea of Godot shows Vladimir and Estragon what to do with it. they really aspire. At first, his and Misaki’s conversations mirror those of Vania, all pointing inward and backward. He tells her how, on the day Oto died, she said she wanted to talk to him about something, and he never got to hear what it was. Even two years later, he is still gripped with regret at this missed opportunity. This feeling rings true for Misaki, who connects it to the regret she feels about her relationship with her mother.

But as long car trips multiply, Yusuke and Misaki are able to see their regrets as possibilities. Misaki helps Yusuke reframe his relationship with Oto not as a lost opportunity, but as one that could help him engage more closely with his art – and possibly possibly take on the role of Vanya without fear. This manifests itself, in particular, when Yusuke asks Misaki to show him where his childhood home was destroyed. There, Hamaguchi films the landscape from wide angles, infusing the location with possibility, as opposed to the suffocating remorse that Misaki once associated it with.

There is a direct correlation between Yusuke and Misaki visiting the ruins of the latter’s childhood and the former deciding to play the role of Vanya himself. Yusuke had previously cast Koji Takatsuki (Masaki Okada) as Vanya, although Koji was at least a decade too young to play the role. This choice of casting testifies, in large part, to Yusuke’s fear of aging in oblivion and his desire to return to a past still rich in possibilities. By re-imagining Vanya as someone who still has his life ahead of him, perhaps he can also re-imagine the role’s hopelessness.

But Koji also represents a more personal element of our protagonist’s past: in the first act of Drive my car, Yusuke arrives on Oto having sex with a younger man, who, from our brief glimpse, is more than likely Koji. After his wife’s death, Yusuke befriends Koji in an effort to unravel the mystery of his late wife. Despite his efforts, their relationship sheds light on Oto. Instead, it brings Yusuke closer to a new version of himself, a truth that is illuminated on a car ride he and Koji do together. They discuss Oto, but, despite the decisive confrontation that takes place in the Saab, no real resolution is reached, further recalling the stunted plot of Godot and its ethereal ability to help focus the desires of its protagonists.

In one of his conversations with Misaki, Yusuke explains his complex relationship with acting. He says that once he’s immersed himself in a role, it’s extremely difficult for him to reappear in his real self. This is why, for the majority of Drive my car, he refuses to entertain the idea of playing Vanya. Already tormented by regret and abandonment, he believes a performance like Vanya would be impossible to return. But when Koji is arrested and cannot play the part of Vanya, Yusuke, emboldened by the recontextualization of the loss that Misaki’s car has brought him, decides to play the part. The final image of Drive my car sees Misaki entering Yusuke’s Saab. We don’t know where she’s going – which version of Godot she’s chasing and likely will find, unlike Vladimir and Estragon who waited for Godot to come to them – but we do know it could be anywhere. At one point, Yusuke asks, “What should I do with my life and my love?” Hamaguchi looks like you just have to take it and move on, away from the rubble of an abandoned house, to a new relationship with the past.

A meeting between the Taoiseach and supporters of a rape aid center for the homeless in Cork is due to take place next month in an attempt to speed up the project.

Catríona Twomey from Cork Penny Dinners is leading the plan with Mary Crilly from Sexual Violence Center Cork and activist Lavinia Kerwick.

The Taoiseach Micheál Martin assured them that their goal of opening a sanctuary for the homeless following sexual assault would continue.

Such a service is urgently needed for people who are violently raped on the streets of Cork every night, Ms Twomey said.

Epidemic of sexual violence

Sexual violence is rampant on the streets, with victims sometimes experiencing multiple rapes per night and having to face their attackers again in the streets within minutes of being released from medical care, she said.

This week Ms Twomey and Penny Dinners opened a state-of-the-art wellness center on James Street in Cork City called Croí na Laoí, which means ‘Heart of Lee’.

Ms Twomey believes the center will help them identify and monitor people who are in desperate need of respite and refuge from sexual abuse, who can then be quickly referred to the rape center upon arrival. opening.

A wellness center on James Street in Cork City called Croí na Laoí which will provide a sanctuary for those suffering from abuse has been opened by Roy Keane.

The center, which was opened by Roy Keane on Tuesday, will also offer cooking classes, educational and training facilities, emotional and psychological support, and free dental and medical care.

Ms Twomey said there are many people in need of such help right now.

“People are really hurting. And the demographics using our services have changed. We now have a lot of good hearted, hard working people who are still struggling to pay all the bills, ”Ms. Twomey said.

“Free dental and medical care should help these people. People who might have a job and not qualify for a medical card but still cannot afford the € 60 to see a doctor.

It is a shame that so many hard working people are in this predicament in our country.

“We will teach people to cook through cooking classes given by professional chefs. Some famous chefs might even get involved.

“We can teach people to take care of themselves and feed themselves with homemade food, what to buy, where to buy it and how to stretch a budget.

“People are suffering because they cannot afford to buy things, but we hope these skills will help people survive.

“It could save someone’s sanity and save someone’s life. Good nutrition can strengthen someone through a crisis.

“We will also have rooms where we can help people prepare to go back to education and training, to eliminate fear and prepare them with the skills they will need. ”

Life is hard for many

She said life is difficult for many people right now as the pandemic has stopped people from working, cut off access to services and left many isolated and lonely.

“The majority of people who came to see us before were homeless, had mental health issues or felt lonely. Now we have a lot of people who work or worked before the pandemic who are really struggling. We had journalists and a lot of musicians who needed help. Costs are going up, people are struggling to pay for their utilities, so their food budgets are reduced and they have to come see us.

Another year has passed. Once again, we have faced many challenges as a community in the midst of this pandemic, businesses are grappling with staff shortages, disease has plagued our households, money is tight and the weight of stress. extra is heavy. We are grateful for one thing that has not changed over the past year: our community’s outpouring of generosity to those in need of our help.

Sadly, it is not surprising that an increase in violence also surfaced during this time, as victims came to us for help and services. I am happy to share that this Christmas we were able to offer gifts to 51 adults and 109 children who use our services because they have been affected by violence (sexual assault, domestic violence, abuse or neglect). For comparison, this is an increase of 45 people from last year. Thanks to our caring community, these 160 people in our service area were able to enjoy new coats, hats, gloves, shoes, bedding, bath towels, toys and more! Some of these families are starting from scratch in a new location for added safety, and we were able to provide them with essential household items like a microwave, vacuum cleaner and dishes to help them on their new beginnings. There were tears of joy, children overflowing with excitement, and many hugs of gratitude and disbelief for the kindness of these anonymous donors.

Here are some reactions:

“To my SOS Santa Claus Christmas, I want to say thank you. I expected presents for my kid, but I didn’t think I would get anything other than pajamas or something. When I opened this beautiful bedding, I couldn’t believe it. Like a magazine bedding! I pulled it out, put it on my bed, and crawled inside. I told my daughter that it must be what it was to stay in a fancy hotel, like the Hilton Inn. We now sleep like queens in my magazine bed. That’s so sweet ! How do the sheets even get so soft? I have never had a new bedding set. All my life I haven’t had used sheets or blankets. Thanks forever! “

“Thank you very much for these wonderful gifts! The duvet is so beautiful. I will always remember it

Christmas especially when I see the quilt. Thank you for making this Christmas such a blessing.

“After receiving the gifts that my secret SOS Santa Claus bought for me, I started to cry as I took them away. I didn’t go too far, lol. It’s the best Christmas I’ve had in years! Hope you also have a merry Christmas.

“I am incredulous. It has been so many years since nobody gave me a present and I am very grateful. “

“I had no idea how I was going to give Christmas presents to my children this year. The fact that SOS and strangers who don’t know me care enough about giving my children and myself a good Christmas is a dream come true.

In addition to the holiday campaign, our dear friends, Mark and Angie Schreiber, have offered to donate $ 10,000 to our Hope Lives appeal. We are happy to announce that with their help, we have received almost $ 40,000. These are critical funds that support the resources of our staff and clients for the coming year where there are gaps in our grant funding. We are so grateful!

We are extremely grateful for the support of our friends in the community and the courageous trust of our clients who seek safety and guidance. May the coming year bring you much joy and peace!

SOS is a non-profit agency that helps children and adults who are victims of sexual and domestic violence, child abuse or neglect. SOS serves five counties in east-central Kansas, including Chase, Coffey, Lyon, Morris and Osage. Bhopal: With the implementation of the new commission system in the state capital, Bhopal Police are working to improve their reach, especially targeting schoolchildren, girls and women.
Police launched a campaign on Friday to increase police awareness and deter cybercrime, crime against women and children. A senior official said a relative recently said people seek help from counselors to resolve issues, most of which relate to criminal cases, but avoid reporting them to police. To encourage citizens to contact the police, the department launched the initiative. DCP (Zone-1) Sai Krishna S Thota, police staff and Childline officials, including Director Archana Sahay, conducted an awareness program on cybercrimes and crimes against women and children at the Jehangirabad public secondary school for girls.
Speaking to students, said DCP Thota, criminals today are adopting innovative ways to commit crimes and people need to be more aware and careful.
Speaking about the increase in cases of online fraud, he advised students to use strong passwords on their social networks and email accounts. Passwords should not be simple, like date of birth or cell phone number, but should be a combination of alphabets, numbers and symbols so that it is not easy for a cybercriminal to decipher or even a friend. He advised students not to share their personal photos, data and other important information on social media platforms. He urged students to be vigilant when shopping online or transacting money through online payment wallets through a mobile phone.
Headmistress Childline Archana Sahay briefed the students on bad and good contacts. She made students aware of sexual offenses and the measures to be taken to prevent them.

LANSING, Michigan – An election campaign launched in Michigan on Friday would enshrine a woman’s abortion right in the state’s constitution, as the U.S. Supreme Court considers weakening or overturning its ruling history Roe v. Wade.

Reproductive Freedom for All’s petition would affirm the right to make pregnancy-related decisions without interference, including about abortion and other reproductive services such as birth control, supporters said. The groups leading the effort are Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, and Michigan Voices.

Michigan still has a 90-year abortion ban on its books if Roe is overturned, and Republican legislative leaders are opposing Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s call to repeal the law. Michigan is one of eight states with unenforced pre-Roe abortion bans.

Last month, the High Court heard arguments over whether to uphold Mississippi’s ban on abortions after the 15th week of pregnancy. Mississippi has asked the Tory Court to overturn Roe and a 1992 follow-up ruling that prevents states from banning abortion before viability, the point around 24 weeks of pregnancy when a fetus can survive outside of uterus. His decision is expected next summer.

Organizers of the polling initiative need around 425,000 valid voters’ signatures to present it to the electorate in November. Circulating petitions successfully can cost millions of dollars.

Nicole Wells Stallworth, executive director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, said the vast majority of residents want abortion to remain safe, legal and accessible. The state is at a “critical moment in history for access to abortion,” she said.

“The time has come for us to come together to protect this fundamental Michigan right as we hold our collective breath for the Supreme Court ruling,” said Loren Khogali, executive director of the Michigan ACLU, affirming rulings “deeply personal” about the decision to abort should be left to women and their health professionals.

State Attorney General Democrat Dana Nessel and at least one local attorney have said they will not enforce the 1931 ban, a form of which has been in effect since 1846. But Whitmer and Nessel are candidates for re-election this year, when Republicans are expected to benefit from favorable political winds, as the party that controls the White House typically fares less well in the first midterm elections after assuming the presidency.

Anti-abortion groups will oppose the petition campaign.

“We cannot allow vulnerable people to be killed for the sake of convenience,” said Barbara Listing, president of Right to Life of Michigan.

Rebecca Mastee, policy advocate at the Michigan Catholic Conference, called the initiative “a sad commentary on the disproportionate and nefarious role the abortion industry plays in our politics and our society.” We look forward to supporting women in a potential statewide election campaign to promote a culture of life and good health for mothers and unborn children. “

In a June poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 61% of Americans said abortion should be legal in most or all circumstances in the first trimester. But a larger majority said abortion should generally or always be illegal in the second and third trimesters.

Voters in at least one other state, Vermont, could also consider a constitutional amendment in November to enshrine “reproductive autonomy” if the Democrat-controlled state chamber sends it to the polls. The state already has a law guaranteeing the right to abortion.

In Kansas, voters will consider an anti-abortion amendment in August that says the state’s constitution provides no rights to abortion and that the legislature can regulate it as lawmakers see fit – meaning that if Roe is overthrown, Republicans could ban abortion altogether.

If you or someone you know needs any resources or support related to sexual violence, contact the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault 24/7 hotline at 800-871-7741.

A South Carolina man was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday for interstate stalking after driving a woman from South Carolina to Maine two and a half years ago and threatening and assaulting her, according to the office of the American attorney.

Dustin Beach, 27, of Green Pond, South Carolina, pleaded guilty last June in U.S. District Court in Portland. In return for his guilty plea, federal prosecutors dropped two counts of kidnapping and one count of witness tampering, according to court documents.

As part of the deal, U.S. District George Singal imposed the maximum allowable sentence for the crime.

Beach drove a woman in her truck from South Carolina to Maine in July 2019, court documents show. During the ride, Beach threatened the victim and assaulted her with his hands and other objects, including a hammer, a metal chain, and the center console torn from the truck. He also used a knife to cut his arms and legs.

At a rest area in Maryland, the victim tried to get passers-by to call 911 for her so she could get help, but they refused to help her, court documents show .

Upon Beach’s conviction, Singal called the South Carolina man’s conduct “sadistic” and found him “a danger to society,” the US prosecutor’s office said.

In addition to his prison term, Singal sentenced Beach to three years on probation.

Beach had been held without bail since his arrest in July 2019. This time will be credited to his sentence.

US Attorney Darcie McElwee praised the work of law enforcement in response to a “vicious crime”.

“I hope the example of these lawsuits and the heavy sentence handed down by the court sends a clear message that such violence will not be tolerated in the District of Maine,” she said.

The opening credits of “Drive My Car” do not begin until after the film has completed 40 minutes. It is a daring gesture, a stake in the ground. But that fits the vibe of his quiet drama, which takes its time unpacking its story and the lives of its characters.

At that 40 minute mark, there is still little indication of where “Drive My Car” is ultimately heading. It’s a three hour journey that addresses grief and loss, the healing power of art and the roads we all travel in life. And it’s a ride worth taking.

Director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, who also co-wrote the screenplay (it’s based on a short story by Haruki Murakami), directs the story with patience and grace, and films it using simple, lackluster visual language. Its characters live, breathe, and smoke cigarettes on long car journeys, and it all unfolds in such a calm, meditative way that when it finally hits you, it lands like a mighty punch.

If the arrival of 2022 makes you think “new year, new me,” get in line, because the humble goldfish took reinvention to a whole new level in a recent study that got them to drive on earth. Proving they are able to dominate (read: navigate) alien environments, participating fish recently got behind the wheel of custom fish vehicles (FOVs) to hit targets in exchange for a treat. Everyone is true: fish can drive now.

The illuminating research comes from scientists at Ben-Gurion University in Israel, who wanted to explore whether navigation skills depend on species, environment, or brain structure, or whether animals share generalizable skills that they can incorporate when, for example, thrown into a water tank. with wheels on dry land. Their results were published in the journal Behavioral Brain Research.

“One way to explore this problem behaviorally is with domain transfer methodology, where one species is integrated into the environment of another species and faces an otherwise familiar task (in our case, the navigation) “, wrote the study authors. “Here we are pushing this idea to the limit by studying a fish’s navigational ability in a terrestrial environment.”

The navigation task involved goldfish “driving” to a visual target in their terrestrial environment that they could see through the walls of the reservoir. Curious about how exactly one learns to drive a goldfish? We were too.

“Animal training usually follows a typical reinforcement (conditioning) procedure that ‘teaches it’ what behavior you want,” Ohad Ben-Shahar told IFLScience. “In our case, this was to allow the fish to randomly ‘explore’ the field of view and its behavior, receiving a reward (a food pellet) once it hit a designated target. time, usually several days, the fish becomes proficient enough to understand what its target is and that it should direct the FOV towards it. “

The FOV, which facilitated the sequel Need For Speed: Fresh out of the bowl (which strongly follows The Fast and the Furious: Rodent Rage) was actually a tank on top of a wheeled platform that responded to the movements of the goldfish. The trained fish were then able to steer the FOV by swimming in the direction they wanted to go. There were six conductors in total, all of whom were goldfish (Carassius auratus) and varied by gender.

Not only were the fish able to hit the targets, but they were able to overcome obstacles, dead ends and wrong turns, and were not fooled by false targets set by the researchers. Their FOV Formula One demonstrates that fish navigation skills do not depend on a watery environment, and that something more universal may be at play in deciding how we find our way.

“The study suggests that the navigation capability is universal rather than environment specific,” said lead author Shachar Givon in an emailed statement to IFLScience. “Second, it shows that goldfish have the cognitive ability to learn a complex task in a completely different environment than they were in. As anyone who has tried to learn to ride a bike or ride a bike will know. car, it’s a challenge at first.

The new year is upon us. If one of your resolutions is a greater commitment to helping those in need, there is no better way than to give life with a blood donation. The Southwest Indiana Red Cross Society is offering you the opportunity to do so during their next Evan’s Journey blood drive on Friday January 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Saint-Paul Lutheran Church in Evansville.

Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the many devastating weather events happening across the country, including the tornadoes that ravaged western Kentucky in December, the Red Cross was forced to cancel a number of blood drives in 2021, which led to its worst blood shortage in more than a decade. Someone needs a blood product somewhere in the country, says the Red Cross every two seconds, that’s why donating is so important.

The Evan’s Journey Blood Drive on January 21 is named in honor of Reitz High School student Evan Meyer, who is currently battling lymphoma and knows full well how important the need for a constant blood supply is. Evan’s brother, Wes, is currently donating stem cells as part of Evan’s treatment. The family, along with the Red Cross, have set a target of 75 units of blood for collection.

How to make a donation

Appointments are not compulsory for the drive but are strongly encouraged. You can make an appointment now by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.

The Red Cross also strongly encourages people with O +, O-, A- and B- to sign up for a Power Red donation. This donation takes a little longer than a standard donation (around 90 minutes) because it separates your red blood cells from the plasma and platelets and then returns the latter to you via saline. This type of donation doubles the impact of your donation on patients who need it.

Win a trip to this year’s Super Bowl

The entire month of January is National Blood Donor Month. In an effort to encourage donation, not only during the Evans Journey blood drive, but throughout the month, the Red Cross has partnered with the NFL to give one lucky donor a trip to this year’s Super Bowl. in Los Angeles, which includes:

  • Two tickets to Super Bowl LVI 2022 in Los Angeles, California
  • Admission to the official NFL hatchback

18-year-old UNL freshman Tina McMenamin was stabbed and sexually assaulted in her apartment on July 25, 1995.

Mentally ill Lincoln man Gregory Gabel was arrested in the homicide and was always the prime suspect, an investigator said, even after crucial DNA evidence failed to link him to the crime scene . Gabel has a computer memory for numbers and facts and a history of tracking women in business and public events, said retired investigator Rich Doetker in 2005.

McMenamin was killed minutes before she went to work at Godfather’s Pizza at 5:30 p.m. that night in 1995. Her roommate Sarah Bognich found her friend in a pool of blood that night.

“The apartment was ransacked. I walked past the bedroom several times before noticing it on the floor. My life changed after that. I tried to go back (to college) and I could never finish . “

A single hair tight in McMenamin’s hand led the police to Gabel. It matched his DNA, one in 1,049 chance. Circumstantial evidence also linked Gabel to the building. And a man matching Gabel’s description was seen fleeing the crime scene, Amberwood Apartments, 4600 Briarpark Drive.

That night Gabel was one block from a Sonic Drive-In. He was there every Tuesday night, cleaning up in exchange for food. And Gabel had previously been convicted of third degree sexual assault and public indecency. Police arrested him a year after the crime.

But two years later, when another DNA test proved the hair was not Gabel’s, he was released. This hair, however, did not necessarily belong to the killer, Doetker said. The investigator also has suspicions about the validity of the second DNA test, carried out in a laboratory in Pennsylvania.

“Questions arose: was it the right hair? The same hair? ” he said.

Murder charges were dropped against Gabel in the hope that further evidence would be found to arrest him again, Doetker said. If the case goes to trial and Gabel is found innocent, Doetker added, he could not be retried if new evidence comes to light.

Mary Hepburn-O’Shea, who has worked in the mental health field in Lincoln for decades and has known Gabel for several years, said in 2005 the man lost two years in prison for something he didn’t had not done.

Hepburn-O’Shea manages the downtown area of OUR Homes, the city’s largest provider of developmental disabilities, which also houses people with mental illness. Gabel lives and works there. “He’s a weird kid,” she said. “He’s never a violent child.”

Then Deputy Police Chief Jim Peschong, speaking in 2005, added that you cannot judge a case on the basis of personal beliefs and assumptions. Peschong said he personally believed there was a suspect in the crime, but declined to name anyone.
