Commanders position group will have biggest impact on 2022 NFL season
The Washington Commanders enter the 2021-22 campaign after a turbulent offseason. Washington has off-season drama with owner Daniel Snyder facing allegations of sexual assault and harassment.
This is serious business and will be a major scenario for commanders.
However, as Washington awaits news of Snyder’s situation, they need to focus on building a successful football team.
The Commanders will get a new quarterback in the upcoming season after trading for Carson Wentz. Wentz hasn’t been the same QB since suffering a torn ACL during his breakout campaign in 2017.
He’s shown flashes of being great over the past few seasons, but he’s prone to turnovers. Wentz threw for 3,563 yards for 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He escaped eight times, five of which were recovered by the opposing defense. While he could still be a great player, Washington must try to limit his out-of-control plays that often lead to turnovers.
The Commanders could have a bounce-back season and qualify for the playoffs. They have a sufficiently talented roster, as long as Wentz can play at a high level.
With that said, here is the key position of the commanders to have the biggest impact on the 2022 NFL season.

Group of key positions of commanders for the 2022 NFL season
Washington’s defensive line is among the best in the league. They have an emerging superstar in Chase Young, who has proven to be an excellent young pass thrower. Young had his season cut short in 2021 after suffering a torn ACL against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10.
Young coming back from injury will be a big boost for Washington’s defense.
Montez Sweat is on the other side and has shown promise in his first three seasons. Although he didn’t become a star, he made an impact, with 21 sacks and seven forced fumbles in his career.
A star on the defensive line last season was Jonathan Allen. The defensive tackle posted a career-high nine sacks and earned his first Pro Bowl nod. Allen’s play is important in the middle and elevates pass throwers to the edge of the defensive line.
The other defensive tackle next to Allen is Daron Payne. Payne is a solid defensive tackle who finished with 4.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hits last season. Although not an elite presence, he provides stability as a second defensive tackle.
Having a top defensive line can do wonders to help win football games. For example, the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams had a formidable defensive line that forced pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was sacked seven times during the Super Bowl, which helped propel Los Angeles to win the game.
Commanders have all the tools and parts to make a similar impact against enemy attacks. Getting the full potential of the defensive line will take the pressure off the secondary because they won’t have to cover as long. It will also help the offense, as it can force more saves and get more opportunities for the offense to score.
Washington will have a tough climb to make the playoffs. They improved their roster this offseason, but the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys were playoff teams last season.
It won’t be easy, but the defensive line could lead the Commanders to the playoffs.
