The Center for Data Science (CDS) and the Department of Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences are seeking candidates for one (1) open-rank joint faculty position, which is expected to begin in September 2023. Faculty members should be outstanding scholars and participate in teaching at all levels, from undergraduate to doctoral.

We seek to develop our strength at the interface between machine learning and science, leveraging advances in data science. Machine learning has the potential to transform our ability to model multi-scale physics, chemistry and biology. We are particularly focused on expanding into the field of data science for physical applications (e.g., fluid dynamics, climate science) and computational applied science with machine learning. Outstanding candidates from other relevant areas of data science will also be considered. Successful candidates could potentially occupy positions that intersect with physics.

This research is part of a recruitment group in Predicting Climate Change and its Impacts: From the Global to Urban Scale that includes the Mathematics and Computer Science departments of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Civil and Urban Engineering of the Tandon School of Engineering, and the Data Science Center. Advances in climate science prediction will require transformative developments in and between mathematics, data science, computer science, physics, engineering and geosciences. More information about this cluster and NYU’s broader faculty cluster hiring initiative can be found on the Faculty Cluster Initiative and Cluster Proposals pages. Additional faculty positions will be advertised as part of the cluster, with the goal of creating a diverse and interdisciplinary cohort to design cutting-edge research and program development. Inquiries about this position and its role within the cluster should be directed to [email protected]

CDS is the focal point of NYU’s academic initiative in data science and statistics, established 9 years ago, and one of the nation’s leading centers for data science research and training. CDS is a dynamic space with approximately 21 jointly appointed professors and 10 associate professors in the fields of computer science, mathematics, engineering, neuroscience, linguistics, politics, psychology, physics, of biology and business. a roster of affiliated faculty spanning a wide range of NYU schools and departments, highly successful undergraduate and master’s programs, and one of the premier data science doctoral programs. CDS research focuses on tools and methods at the intersection between applied mathematics, data science, high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, optimization, and several data-driven application areas .

The Courant Institute Mathematics Department is a world-renowned center for applied mathematics (including mathematics for data science and machine learning), scientific computing, PDEs, analysis, probability, geometry and other fields. Courant is also home to NYU’s Department of Computer Science, which is a leader in machine learning and AI, among other areas.

CDS and the Courant Institute (both in mathematics and computer science) host vibrant interdisciplinary doctoral programs, and a number of faculty hold joint positions at the Center for Data Science and the Courant Institute.

A PhD in Applied Mathematics and/or Applied Physics or related quantitative field is required.

Please include a cover letter, CV, a brief statement of your research and teaching interests, and at least three confidential letters of recommendation. We encourage applicants to include a brief statement describing how your research, teaching, and services contribute to diversity and inclusion.

Applications and supporting documents received by Friday 16 December will be fully considered.

Please submit your application via the Climate Cluster Position Interfolio application page.
