Drishyam (2015): The Murder Mystery
Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) lived happily with his family consisting of his wife Nandini (Shriya Saran) and two daughters, Anju (Ishita Dutta) and Anu (Mrunal Jadhav). October 2, 2014; a storm surrounded his family. This “storm” was none other than a high school student named Sameer Deshmukh (Rishab Chadha).
While Vijay’s eldest daughter, Anju, was away on nature camping, Sameer secretly videotaped her taking off her clothes and taking a shower. After committing this heinous act, he went to The Salgaonkar to blackmail Anju into having sex with him in exchange for her nude music video he had on his cell phone.
Vijay was not present in the house at that time. Vijay’s wife Nandini pleaded with Sameer to delete the music video and leave his family alone. However, Sameer refused to delete the music video unless his sexual demands were met. And how bad can he get? ! Perv Sameer now turned his eyes on Nandini, who was his mother’s age, and demanded to have sex with her in exchange for the clip! He agreed to remove the music video only if Nandini had sex with him.
Seeing her mother’s fate, Anju attacked Sameer. She and Nandini then tried to snatch the cell phone from him and break it. In an attempt to smash the offending cellphone, Anju hit it with a lead pipe, but it hit him in the head instead, killing him instantly.
Vijay arrived at this time and found Sameer dead. Worse still, Sameer happened to be the only son of Inspector General (IG) of Goa Meera Deshmukh (Taboo). Vijay planned to save his family from murder before it was too late. So he decided to hide Sameer’s corpse in a secret place where no one, not even the police, could locate it.
So he devised a foolproof plan. He got rid of the broken cell phone as well as Sameer’s car. The next day he took his family on a trip to Panaji in Goa where they visited a monastery, watched a movie and ate at a restaurant. It was all part of his plan.
However, as fate would have it, Sub-Inspector Laxmikant Gaitonde (Kamlesh Sawant), who resents Vijay had seen him driving Sameer’s car as he was about to get rid of it. Thus, it aroused IG Meera Deshmukh’s curiosity for Vijay and her family, and she called them for questioning about her missing son.
Vijay predicted that the police would eventually call, so he taught his wife and daughters how to deal with interrogations without arousing suspicion. When interviewed individually, the family stuck to individual accounts of their bus trips, visit to the monastery and lunch at the restaurant. This confused the police even more. Vijay even produced bus tickets, movie tickets, accommodation and restaurant bills as proof of the family’s visit to Panji. So if they were in Panaji that day, how could they be involved in Sameer’s disappearance?
Meera even interviewed the owners of the establishments they had been to, and their statements proved Vijay’s alibi. Suddenly she realized that on the day of the incident, Vijay had actually manipulated the minds of the owners of the establishment using her mind and made them unwittingly lie to the police.
This led her to call Vijay and his family for a serious investigation, and this time it was physical! The police ruthlessly beat the whole family, including her granddaughter Anu. Anu, being a child, could not stand the police brutality and confessed that her father had buried Sameer’s corpse in their garden.
Meera and her entire police team rushed into Vijay’s garden and the search began. But instead of Sameer’s corpse, they found the rotting carcass of a dog! Vijay then manipulated the audience into shouting at them that the monster Sub-Inspector Gaitonde got his hands on his baby girl while forcing them to admit to a crime they did not commit. It is well known that the Indian public is ruthless, whether you are a cop or a criminal! The public threw themselves on Sub-Inspector Gaitonde and beat him black on blue.
Finding no evidence against Vijay and his family, the case of the missing Sameer was closed, much to Meera’s dismay. Vijay and his family walked freely.
And oh! The town had a newly built police station whose foundation was laid the day Vijay got rid of Sameer’s body. Nobody knows where he really put it. But a flashback reveals him digging and burying the body. After burying the body, the place existed, which was none other than the police station then under construction!
Drishyam 2 (2022): Murder Case Reopens
It was the same evening of October 2, 2014. A man named David (Siddharth Bodke) fled from police after murdering his brother-in-law. Hiding behind a police station under construction, he had seen the exit of Vijay Salgaonkar. Subsequently, David ended up being arrested.
Seven years later, Vijay and his family were living in peace. Vijay had now opened a movie theater and was looking to produce a film with screenwriter Murad Ali (Saurabh Shukla). As a result of her trauma from her involvement in Sameer’s murder, Anju suffered from epilepsy.
Vijay had become a wealthy man. Jealous of the increase in the family’s wealth, the locals resorted to spreading rumors that Anju was in a relationship with Sameer, much to the dismay of her mother Nandini. Nandini’s only solace was her friendly neighbor Jenny (Neha Joshi) who was constantly abused by her alcoholic husband Shiv (Nishat Singh). Meanwhile, Goa’s new IG, Tarun Ahlawat (Akshaye Khanna), who happened to be Meera’s colleague, planned to avenge Sameer’s murder.
At the same time, David was released from prison. He witnessed Vijay exiting the police station under construction on October 2, 2014, the day Sameer was murdered. After hearing David’s verdict, Tarun summoned Meera who resided in London. The police station was dismantled. Digging work continued and eventually a human skeleton was discovered. Vijay realized this and feared the worst.
Vijay and his family were summoned for questioning and Meera revealed a voice recording of Nandini’s confession to Jenny, exposing the truth. It was also revealed that Jenny and Shiv were married undercover cops, who were assigned by Tarun to eavesdrop on the family. Meera then turned to question Anju, who, out of anxiety, had had a seizure. Seeing his daughter’s fate, a distraught Vijay falsely claimed that he was the culprit of Sameer’s murder. The police were satisfied with Vijay’s confession. They released his family and arrested him instead.
Meanwhile, Vijay screenwriter Murad learned of his arrest. He visited Meera and Tarun and revealed that during one of his business coalitions with Vijay, the latter fabricated a script for a future crime thriller loosely based on Sameer’s murder. He also revealed that the script was converted into a novel despite being released under Murad’s name for copyright protection.
The story takes a twist as Vijay pleaded not guilty at trial! His lawyer claimed that the police used the plot of the novel as a ploy to incriminate him. Furthermore, the judge revealed that the DNA on the corpse, which was discovered buried under the police station, did not match Sameer’s DNA, much to everyone’s chagrin!
Then Murad revealed that Vijay had created an alternate climax in his storyline in which the hero (indicating Vijay) had obtained the remains of another young man of the same age as Sameer by befriending the gravedigger of a local cemetery. The novel’s plot goes further that he would keep the remains with him for three years before befriending a security guard at a local morgue under the guise of offering him a role in his film. That same night, the remains would be excavated from the police station and sent to the morgue. The hero would then swap the remains before DNA analysis takes place.
Due to lack of evidence, Vijay was released on bail. The police were forbidden to bother him and his family. With all cases against Vijay closed, Murad revealed to Tarun and Meera that the novel’s climax ended with an ending in which the hero would hand over the villain’s remains to the bereaved parents. As Murad completed his sentence, Vijay handed over Sameer’s cremated remains to Meera and her husband and solemnly left the scene.
