Man Hosts Steamy Podcast With Sex Therapist Mom – Admits His Life Is Like Netflix Sex Education
This fearless mom and son claim they’re the real Otis and Jean Milburn of Netflix’s sex education – after the boy started an X-rated podcast with his sex therapist MUM.
Diggory Waite was stunned when he first watched the first season of the scorching teen comedy in 2019 because he had “lived it before” – using the knowledge of his mother Cate Campbell to help his pals to “s. ‘send in the air’.
The 25-year-old had grown up talking openly about sex, just like the geek character from the hit series, even making a name for himself among his friends, who came to see him with their relationship issues.
When Diggory started a new job as a podcast producer last year, he decided to use his unique upbringing to present a podcast idea called The Real Sex Education, which is already in its third season.
In each episode, Diggory and Cate chat with comedians and experts about their own sex education, hoping to explore what they learned then and how far they’ve come since.
Now, Diggory and Cate hope their unfazed approach to “birds and bees” proves that talking about sex should never be “scary or weird,” even if it’s with your own parents.
Diggory, from Islington, London, said: “The TV show came out and mom and I saw some striking similarities.
“Obviously Otis is a strange name, Diggory is a strange name. [We’re] the two white boys who can’t get laid but help their friends to do it.
“In school, I kept telling people this, that and the other. [this person] this happened]’. It was like the show.
“They were asking me these questions and I was answering them. That was at the time.
“The TV show worked well but I didn’t really watch it because it was like watching my own life. I already know what it is – I’m already living it.
“I watched a few episodes, it’s great, but I think I’ve literally been through this before, what am I doing here?”
Diggory started a new role and returned to live with his mother during the lockdown, when he suggested The Real Sex Education.
Diggory said: “When the lockdown took place, I had just joined a new company that was setting up a new podcast department.
“They said ‘to get us started, do you want to share some of your podcast ideas with us?’
“I went back to live with my mother for a bit. Every day we took our walks every hour.
“She’s a sex therapist, I’m interested in sex and relationships and we’ve been talking about that all along.
“People were probably thinking ‘what’s going on over there’ when they heard snippets of our conversation.
“I was thinking of presenting something because I had just joined this new company. I knew there were legs – I know people find it interesting, I find it interesting.
“Mom’s advice has been very helpful for me and my friends. Now it’s season three.
“We want to show that it doesn’t have to be scary or weird to talk to anyone about sex and when we do, we can learn a lot more than what we learned in school.”
Much like the show, Diggory claims her friends thought her mom’s job was “cool” and had loads of questions for her as they navigated their own relationships.
He even claims that on one occasion his friend thought it was “mental” that they talked about sex over dinner, because his own family wouldn’t even discuss it at all.
Diggory said, “At school I was never bullied. People thought it was cool.
“When the kids came to my house, they couldn’t believe we were talking about sex at the table.
“My friend was like ‘it’s mental.’ Sex wouldn’t be pronounced in his house – especially not at the table.
“Mum was very open whenever sex happened, it wasn’t something she feared and I really enjoyed it.
“Everyone loves it. Some people didn’t really understand what a sex therapist was, I don’t think they still understand it to be honest.
“Some of my friends, even to this day, have questions. They’ll ask me and I’ll tell them things. It’s very helpful.”
While in Sex Education, Jean Milburn’s house is littered with erotic art and literature, Diggory claims his house was pretty normal – aside from his mother’s phallic diagrams on his computer screensaver.
Diggory said, “Our house is normal and ordinary. However, Mom does sex therapy and teaches it, so she has a lot of diagrams and pictures on her computer.
“When I was a kid I would walk past the desk. The screen saver was on and there were pictures. Pictures of us on vacation, pictures of mom’s mother when she was younger, then just a penis Just a cross section of a penis with everything labeled.
“There are no adornments and in case she is top secret, not a chain of men either, which I know Gillian Anderson has on the show.”
Now the pair have aired 21 episodes with The Chase’s Paul Sinha and YouTuber Hannah Witton as guests on the podcast.
Diggory said, “It’s funny because everyone we talk to has said their sex education is crap.
“It’s not great. What you need are two things – real science and also real life.
“What would be helpful if you told me how to put a condom on or about consent.
“On the podcast, people often refer to ‘the cat.’ It’s often that big event and it’s better than people saying ‘don’t talk about it at all,’ but my mom’s approach was that it was a series of discussions and an open dialogue that never ends.
“Imagine you sit down with your son or daughter, chat to them and walk away, think ‘forgot to mention it’, but think ‘well, we’ve been chatting now – can’t come back backward ” .
“It’s surprisingly similar to the TV show in that we got sex education, learned about the fallopian tubes and so much about reproduction – all of which I haven’t thought about for the most part – but while all this was going on, my friends would come up to me and say “i have a problem, what does your mom think?”
“A lot of people say, ‘Do you talk to your mom about your sex life? Absolutely not, it’s too personal, you can talk about sex in general terms.
“There won’t be any personal stories on the podcast, although a couple of times do slip through the cracks.”
Cate, who worked as a sex therapist for 15 years, says that when Diggory first came up with the idea for the podcast, she was eager to try it out – eager to cover important issues that are often overlooked.
Cate Campbell, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, said: “It wasn’t a huge surprise when Diggory came to me with this idea.
“When the Netflix series came out, we were like ‘Oh my God, this is us’ right away. It’s not that we’re the same, we’re very different, but Diggory was giving people information. . [when younger] and always coming to me for advice.
“When he went to work at his new job he said ‘can we do this?’ I said, ‘of course we could.’ Before I knew it, it was happening – and it was fun.
“When we started out, we just thought it was about opening up the topic and really giving out more information than most of the people we spoke to had in school.
“Since I started working as a sex therapist for about 15 years, sex education has changed dramatically.
“We got such a great response that we started to refine the topics, so we’re covering things that kept coming up in conversations like polyamory and next week we’re talking pegging.
“The sex addiction was important, as well as asexuality. It was really fascinating and there is a lot to learn.
“I can talk about what’s going on in sex therapy and Diggory may be curious from a lay point of view, but of course he has now gained a lot of information and knows a lot. I think he would do a very good job. good sex therapist now.
“He comes from a much greater knowledge position, so he’s changed.”
In addition to talking to the comedians, Cate and Diggory also spoke with illustrator Flo Perry about her book “How To Have Feminist Sex”, while covering more difficult topics like FGM.
Cate said, “When we tell people about the podcast, on the whole people are really interested.
“It was interesting for me because I got to talk to people I always wanted to talk to.
“We started out by talking mainly to celebrities, which was a lot of fun because some of them were comedians.
“Then we started to introduce other people who really wanted to talk, like we talked to a guy about chemsex, which a lot of people don’t know but which is really important.
“We did a really, really tough episode on female genital mutilation, which a lot of people don’t understand.
“We think we are really giving sex education that people might not have had, for the first time.”
