New BSD position to support families in special education – Bellevue School District

BSD recently created a new Special Education Family Liaison position to support students and families. Gita McIntyre took on this role after spending the past 15 years supporting families in a variety of educational settings. Gita is a Bellevue resident and BSD parent, and she looks forward to working with families, educators, and the community using a collaborative approach to meet the educational needs of students.

Roles of Family Liaison in Special Education

The Special Education Family Liaison Officer is a new position that serves as a bridge between families and the Special Education Department. The position aims to promote family and community engagement by providing information to families, students, educators and community partners about special education services in the district. The Liaison Officer will provide confidential and impartial advice, information and support. Please note that the Liaison Officer cannot defend any party and does not determine the services provided. Here are some ways to use the Special Education Family Liaison:

  • Helps understand special education processes and procedures
  • Confidential consultation on a special education issue
  • Referral to disability-related community resources or appropriate special education staff
  • Developing communication strategies that help support a team approach to student special education plans
