Petition campaign aims to shut down adult novelty retailer in West Shreveport
Shreveport, La. (KTBS) – An effort to prevent a sex trade business from opening in West Shreveport intensified Monday afternoon with a petition in a parking lot at the intersection of Pines and Buncombe roads . The company in question is Hustler Hollywood on Financial Plaza. It’s not open yet but should be an adult novelty retailer.
The people who came forward to sign the petition were very committed to the issue. They fear it is very close to Huntington High School and Turner Elementary School, people like Mardra Stokes whose grandson goes to nearby Huntington High School.
“It’s already a bit bad where I live, crackheads and drug addicts. And we don’t need that in our neighborhood, all that sex and stuff. They’ve had enough online,” Stokes said.
Brad Buckman also signed the petition on Monday.
“We’re looking to improve our community, and for me, I want healthy options here,” Buckman said. “I want family stuff, and that doesn’t fall into that category, so in my opinion, we don’t want that here on this side of town.”
The petition campaign was organized by District G City Council candidate Derrick L Henderson.
He told me that the proximity of two schools and a daycare bothered him the most.
“We don’t want that in our community,” Henderson said. “We weren’t told or informed about it properly and that’s our stance against it. We will send a clear message to the MPC, the city council, as well as the parish committee that we do not want to do business like this in West Shreveport.
KTBS 3 news learned last week that the city has yet to approve a certificate of occupancy for the store.
