JOB DESCRIPTION

The Plasma Diagnostics Group (CEO – https: //plasma-diagnostics-group.physics.ucla.edu) of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCLA invites outstanding candidates to apply for a full-time position (100% ) as an Assistant Researcher in the field of plasma and fusion physics. The nominee will engage in independent and creative experimental research in the broad area of ​​fast ion physics in fusion research plasma at the national spherical upgrade facility Torus eXperiment (NSTX-U – https: //nstx-u.pppl.gov), located at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in Princeton (PPPL), NJ, USA. The appointee will be in a full-time position at PPPL and the position is open from July 2022.

The NSTX-U is an innovative magnetic fusion device in the spherical tokamak configuration featuring a powerful plasma diagnostic suite and advanced high power, high energy neutral beam injection capability. This capability will open up new opportunities for advancement in many areas of fast ion physics, including instabilities induced by fast ions and fast ion transport, as well as their interaction with turbulence and impacts on training and heating of a current of fast ions. The appointee will work closely with other members of the CEO and the NSTX-U research team. The NSTX-U research team includes physicists and engineers from more than 30 other US laboratories and universities and 20 international institutions from 9 countries.

The appointee will be responsible for identifying and researching new and high-value opportunities for advancements in fast ion physics that harness the unique capabilities of NSTX-U. In practice, this will consist of leading or collaborating in the design and execution of experiments in NSTX-U, carrying out associated models and disseminating the results through presentations at conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, the nominee will help mentor UCLA students engaged in research at NSTX-U and actively participate in the preparation of grant proposals and progress reports.

The Assistant Researcher position is an academic career position that encourages and expects the appointee to evolve into a scientific leadership role (https://www.apo.ucla.edu/policies-forms/the-call/ professional-research-series / professional-research-series-1). The position potentially offers the appointee the opportunity to write proposals to agencies such as the US DoE and NSF for funding to support self-directed research. The initial appointment is for two years with renewal subject to satisfactory professional development and renewal of funding. Salary will follow Professional Research Series standards and scale based on the appointee’s experience (from $ 80,800 / year, effective 7/2021). The appointment includes health and pension benefits.

Qualified applicants will have a doctorate. in physics or related field, and demonstrated experience applicable to the field of research. Ideally, the candidate should have at least two years of related work experience after earning a doctorate, although outstanding candidates with less experience are considered.
