MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – Police are investigating what they described as a sexual assault case involving a woman who was caught on surveillance video staggering down a street near Ocean Drive before getting into a car with a group of men.
Acting on reports of a rape in Miami Beach that occurred after parties met near Ninth Street and Ocean Drive, 7News reached out to Mitch Novick, the owner of the Sherbrooke hotel, to see if he has any. a surveillance video.
“I had the images available,” Novick said.
As it turns out, Miami Beach Police detectives also contacted Novick about security footage relating to the Nov.21 incident.
According to the police report, several men met a group of women after leaving Mango’s Tropical Cafe and “invited them for more drinks.”
Investigators said the victim was part of the group and eventually left with the men.
Surveillance video shows the woman as she made her way to a waiting car driven by one of the men.
Witnesses encouraged a friend of the victim to prevent him from leaving.
“Go get her!” Someone is heard saying in the video.
The friend even got into the car but quickly got out with the victim still inside.
“She didn’t trust these guys,” Novick said.
The vehicle finally drove off, much to the dismay of those watching.
“[The witnesses] were saying something correctly about “She’s about to be raped,” Novick said.
While inside the car, the victim told police that “Subject # 1 made a sexual advance.”
The report further states that the victim “remembers fainting and remembers nothing else”.
The report states that she “was then woken up by subject # 1 above her, herself completely naked.”
Investigators said the woman left on foot and ran for help in an unknown neighborhood. She tried to flag down the drivers, but no one stopped.
Police said the woman eventually confronted one of the men from the day before and asked him to take her to the police station.
Instead, the police report says she was driven to Miami International Airport.
The report states: “[The] the object is placed on order [the victim] an Uber ride, canceled the Uber after the driver arrived and paid the Uber driver, in cash, to take them to the airport. [The victim] was never informed of this, got into the vehicle and was dropped off at the airport.
While at MIA, police said, she told an officer she had been raped hours earlier. It was then that Miami Beach Police detectives were called.
According to police sources, the woman was a tourist.
Novick said he hopes a new ordinance imposing a final 2am call for alcohol that was passed in the last election will help prevent incidents like this in his neighborhood.
