Preah Sihanouk pushes to register foreigners

Provincial authorities in Preah Sihanouk have ordered all building owners and managers to register details of all foreigners staying and working on the premises and register the information with local authorities by September 24.

The order issued on Friday included the instruction for landlords to also send updates on the alien’s status to local authorities.

Preah Sihanouk provincial hall spokesman Kheang Phearum said yesterday authorities had given owners and managers 14 days to submit the information to local authorities.

“If the landlord does not cooperate and allow foreigners without proper documentation to live and work in their building, they will be prosecuted,” Phearum said.

Authorities have issued an order to discover any foreigner who does not have a passport or visa to stay and work in Cambodia and to prevent human trafficking, forced labor, sex trafficking, confinement or torture occurring on property.

The order is to ensure public order and safety not only of locals but also of foreigners residing and working in Cambodia, especially in the province of Preah Sihanouk.

“If an owner or manager violates the order, they will be held liable according to law,” he added.

Heng Kimhong, head of the Cambodian Youth Network’s research and advocacy program, said yesterday that provincial authorities in Preah Sihanouk want to inspect and understand the activities of foreigners doing business and working in Cambodia.

“Owners or managers must ensure the legality of any stranger working or residing on their property, but this does not mean that the authorities monitor the activities of an individual because the authorities cannot restrict or control the privacy of an individual. individual,” Kimhong said.

Preah Sihanouk Province Governor Kuoch Chamroeun has also taken tough action against any casinos or other businesses involved in shootings, confinement, drug use and other crimes.

Chamroeun warned that the authorities will shut down these businesses and asked the government to revoke their licenses if crimes still occur and the perpetrators will be apprehended and prosecuted according to law.
