Q&A: Meet the Candidates for Position 6 of the Cy-Fair ISD School Board

Fourteen candidates are vying for one of three Cy-Fair ISD board positions up for election this fall.

Positions 5, 6 and 7 will be on the ballot. John Ogletree, Don Ryan and Bob R. Covey hold these respective seats and are all running for re-election. The election will take place on November 2 after an early voting period from October 18 to 29.

We asked each candidate why they were running and how they would meet the challenges of the district if elected. Some answers may have been edited for clarity.

Why are you a candidate for the Board of Directors of Cy-Fair ISD?

RCIJ:
I am a candidate for the board of directors of CFISD because of my passion and my call to public service. CFISD had the biggest impression on my life as a student growing up. I am a direct product of the amazing teachers in the school district who have played a big part in my current success, nurturing my spirit and shaping my character. I have the skills and motivation to serve the community that has served me in a way most will never understand. My own life experience has taught me that teachers are the backbone of public education. I believe now is the time for me to serve CFISD.

What does the district motto “Opportunity for All” mean to you and how would you support this mission?

RCIJ:
The district motto means to me an opportunity for every student, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, economic status and sexual orientation. I can say this because I have witnessed it firsthand. CFISD cares about all of its students and will do whatever it takes to be successful, because failure is never an option. Our teachers, staff and administration have always gone out of their way for our children. I hope I will soon be able to build on the progress already made by including all the voices of the community.

What are the biggest challenges facing the school district and how would you approach these issues?

RCIJ:
Classroom size, school safety and [Teacher Retirement System of Texas] insurance are the most important challenges facing our district today. I would address these issues by working with my fellow council members, the Superintendent [Mark] Henry and the administration on a successful plan for each of these problems. I would also include teachers and staff as well as the public and get feedback on what would be the best course of action regarding each of these challenges we face.

Why are you a candidate for the Board of Directors of Cy-Fair ISD?

DR:
I run to serve the community in which I grew up and where my wife and I choose to raise our children. I have been part of a team that has guided our district through difficult times and unprecedented growth. We have faced hurricanes, floods, ice storms and a pandemic while remaining one of the best public school districts in the country. I want to continue to be part of a team that expects excellence in education and provides an opportunity for each student to be successful in their future endeavors.

What does the district motto “Opportunity for All” mean to you and how would you support this mission?

DR:
Opportunity for All means that we provide each of our students and employees with the opportunities they need to be personally successful. This means that every student will benefit from a rigorous curriculum, first-class facilities, cutting-edge technology, and an abundance of extracurricular activities, regardless of where they live in our district. or the CFISD school he attends.

What are the biggest challenges facing the school district and how would you approach these issues?

DR:
The most recent significant challenges facing CFISD have been COVID-19 and its impact on our campuses, employees and students. We have addressed this issue by having our schools deep cleaned on an ongoing basis and protocols have been coordinated and implemented to protect our staff and students from COVID outbreaks on campuses and support facilities. We have also approved a COVID-19 leave policy for our employees. Fortunately, all of these security measures have resulted in no campuses being closed due to COVID-19. Another challenge facing our district is catching up with the kids in virtual education. By offering free summer programs to our students and ongoing tutorials, CFISD is committed to helping these students catch up and succeed.

Why are you a candidate for the Board of Directors of Cy-Fair ISD?

CH:
Ensure the district continues to exceed expectations for student achievement. My role as a board member will be to listen to the CFISD community, monitor the success and assess the effectiveness of the district. The district will continue to grow and will need the next generation of administrators to lead this next phase of growth.

What does the district motto “Opportunity for All” mean to you and how would you support this mission?

CH:
“Opportunity for All” means that regardless of status, learning ability, influence, gender, race and many others, the district emphasizes student achievement. We understand that there will be obstacles, but our motivation is above all excellence.

What are the biggest challenges facing the school district and how would you approach these issues?

CH:
COVID-19, its future variants and its impact on the learning environment. My initiative makes greater use of technological resources in classrooms today to prepare students to manage their time and become proficient computer users. We need to establish key performance indicators that ensure students are prepared for virtual learning. Education = success. Every voice. Every student. Everyday.

Why are you a candidate for the Board of Directors of Cy-Fair ISD?

SH:
I come to the school board because I have a child in school and I care about their future and their experience in school. It is important that each member of the board has a vested interest in making decisions about the direction of their children. I also believe I have better ideas. We should have term limits for board members and no director should sit on the board for 20 years or more.

What does the district motto “Opportunity for All” mean to you and how would you support this mission?

SH:
The motto means that every student has the ability to achieve and perform to their full potential. As a district, we need to empower our teachers and staff to find innovative ways to reach and help our students.

What are the biggest challenges facing the school district and how would you approach these issues?

SH:
Our teachers need more freedom in the classroom so that they can empower themselves and connect with students to inspire academic excellence and become passionate about teaching again. The current curriculum has been a real challenge for teachers and needs a top-down review with more flexibility at the classroom level.
