Following a hearing into teacher misconduct, Aimee Jones, 36, who worked at a school in Darlington, has been banned from teaching in England indefinitely. During the hearing, which was published in the teaching misconduct results on Nov. 16, officials said she would not be allowed to reapply for her teaching job. They also noted that during her teaching career, she had become a “respected teacher”. Jones was jailed for eight months in November 2021 after admitting four offenses involving a girl aged between 13 and 17. She texted the girl, arranging a meet in the County Durham area and engaging in sexual activity, but also admitted what she was doing was wrong. Jones began working at the school in September 2016 and had progressed to head of her department before being arrested on school grounds on March 19, 2021, after her husband, who is a social worker, reported her to the police. The student, who cannot be named for legal reasons, later gave a statement to police on March 21 and the next day Jones’ job was terminated, the panel said. In a report, the panel said the “ban was both proportionate and appropriate” because Jones’ “extremely serious” offenses involved sexual activity with a child and gross breach of trust. He added: ‘The panel felt that public confidence in the profession could be seriously undermined if conduct such as that found against Ms Jones was not treated with the utmost seriousness.’ Her report also says the teacher ‘admitted her actions to the police’ and, according to the sentencing judge in her case at Teesside Crown Court, showed ‘entirely sincere remorse’ and had ‘genuine concern for the good -being” of his victim. The story continues The panel noted the judge’s comments that “nothing suggested that, except for this offence, you were anything other than a good and respected teacher.” Representing the Secretary of State for Education, policymaker Alan Meyrick said a ban was ‘necessary to maintain public confidence’ in teachers, adding: ‘Given the seriousness of the proven allegation against her , I have decided that Aimee Jones does not have the right to seek restoration of her eligibility to teach.” Jones was also placed on the sex offender registry for 10 years after admitting four counts of abusing a position of trust by engaging in sexual activity with a 13- to 17-year-old woman while she did not believe the victim was over 18. Jones was told she could appeal the ban within 28 days. Read next: If you want to read more great stories, why not subscribe to your Northern Echo for as little as £1.25 a week.
