SJP’s “It’s a Baguette” Comes to Life in Fendi’s Resort 2023 Collection

Rewind to Season 3, Episode 13, “It’s not a bag, it’s a wand“, said Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City, and the pop apotheosis of the Baguette was complete. A statement that is written inside each of the capsule bags, or rather Baguettes, of SJP.

Once upon a time, in a ruthless romance where downtown meets downtown, Fendi celebrated its 25th anniversary by celebrating the house’s famous Baguette bag. To mark this milestone, Fendi atelier sculptors Kim Jones and Silvia Venturini Fendi took to the stage at – the place where the bag’s position in pop culture history was sealed – New York . The debut featured special collections from Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co, Sarah Jessica Parker and Porter.

At the crossroads between excess and reality, luxury and utility, the Baguette and the rest of the house’s Resort collection quickly evolved into something of a visual hallmark – symbolizing this beginning as a moment of history and part of a continuum with today. Drawing inspiration from the spirit and geography of the Baguette itself, the bag reflects a moment in history, immersing itself in an identity of nostalgia and pleasure. Whether it is clothing or accessories, the Resort collection reflects the designer – without ever neglecting the pleasure and sense of commemoration for the wearer. Contrasting and cohesive, a sense of hyper-luxury, gleaming glamor pervades the collection – promoting that the Baguette may not be entirely utilitarian after all.

Amid the hub of cultural maestros – artists, actors, musicians and global ambassadors from all walks of life – politely sat Kim Kardashian, Sarah Jessica Parker and Naomi Watts at one end of the front row and Shalom Harlow and Kate Moss at the other .

For Marc Jacobs, the large dimensions of another time contrast with the humble origins of today and, in doing so, banish notions of costume in his collection. Reflecting New York’s glittering, gritty cityscape, casual is made formal in parachute train skirts, balloon-backed broken denim jackets, rustling cellophane opera capes, and neon recycled fur stoles and hats.

As for ‘Fendi at Tiffany’s – the name proclaimed for the meeting of these two great buildings. – a legendary New York institution that takes on the Baguette and reinvents it in its most precious forms through the use of sterling silver, enamel, Croco, white gold and diamonds. The T and F complement each other in diamond-encrusted white gold logo closures while a gleaming crocodile mimics the famous hue of Tiffany blue – a color that also pervades the Fendi clothing palette irresistibly. Perhaps most surprising of all is an unprecedented Baguette entirely in dotted sterling silver. Handcrafted over a four month period by Tiffany artisans, the bag is engraved with lilies and roses.

By contrast, the supreme utility of Japanese luggage brand Porter gives the Baguette a decidedly masculine bent. Renowned for their hard-wearing bonded nylon – which nevertheless exudes beauty and luxury – as well as precision Japanese craftsmanship, here lightness and functionality are key. The Porter Collection is also a proponent of one of the latest incarnations of the Baguette: the Bum Baguette.
