Disney is in hot water over its refusal to condemn the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

The Florida law is a move to ban school discussions about sexual orientation with young children.

Bill clarifies that classroom instruction “about sexual orientation or gender identity may not take place in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate “.

In a memo sent to employees on March 7, Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Bob Chapek told employees that while Disney supports the LGBTQ+ community, the company chooses not to rock the boat by remaining neutral on the legislation. .

“I don’t want anyone to confuse a lack of reporting with a lack of support,” Chapek wrote. “We all share the same goal of a more tolerant and respectful world. Where we can differ is in the tactics to get there.

He believes that “corporate statements do very little to change outcomes or minds” and that these are “often weaponized by one side or the other to further divide and inflame.”

Chapek stressed that the best way to take a stand and fight back is through “the inspirational content we produce” and by creating “diverse stories”, because “this fight is much bigger than any bill in any state”.

“Are we going to take a stand for homosexuals? No. But will you continue to sell Pride products and make money from the LGBTQ+ community? Yes.”

Employees protested the move, urging Disney to speak out with the hashtags #DisneySayGay and #DisneyDoBetter.

The damage is done. People talk about Disney’s inability to take a stand and decided to walk away from Walt. One of our favorites, Miss Coco Peru said on her Facebook Fans page:

On March 10, Chapek announced the reversal of said decision, saying the company now publicly opposes the Florida legislation and will oppose other similar legislation across the country. At the company’s annual meeting on Wednesday, Chapek said that while the company was opposed to the bill at first, it could work with Florida lawmakers to “get a better outcome.” Instinctors, is it too little too late or stay tuned?

“I understand that our original approach, however well-intentioned, didn’t quite do the job,” Chapek said. “But we are committed to supporting the community in the future.”

After taking his first public stand against the bill, Chapek announced that The Walt Disney Company was pledging $5 million to the Human Rights Campaign and other organizations protecting LGBTQ rights.

The Human Rights Campaign responded by refusing to take the donation until “meaningful action” to fight Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation is taken.

In a March 9 press release, the organization said, “The Human Rights Campaign will not accept this money from Disney until we see them build on their public commitment and work with the LGBTQ+ advocates to ensure that dangerous propositions, like ‘Don’t Say’ in Florida. Bill Gay or Trans, don’t become dangerous laws.

“While Disney has taken an unfortunate stance of choosing to remain silent amid political attacks on LGBTQ+ families in Florida – including working families employed by Disney – today they have taken a step in the right direction. . But it was only a first step. »

Politico says “DeSantis agrees to meet Disney CEO amid ‘Don’t Say Gay’ fallout

The Walt Disney Co. CEO told shareholders on Wednesday that Governor Ron DeSantis had agreed to meet with him to discuss Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” parental rights bill amid widespread condemnation of the controversial measure.

Bob Chapek, the head of the California-based Walt Disney Company, said he called DeSantis to express “his disappointment and concern” at the legislation and that the Republican governor agreed to meet with him and the leaders of LGBTQ society on the impact the bill could have, according to a reading of Chapek’s comments provided to POLITICO by Disney.

DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw confirmed the two spoke on Wednesday, but said the governor was not changing his support for the bill, which bars educators from conducting classes on sexual orientation or gender issues with students from kindergarten to third grade. DeSantis has yet to sign the legislation.

What emerges is that the Republican-backed “Don’t Say Gay” bill has caused a stir in Florida and now at Disney. And oh yes, our LGBT youth in Florida and soon in other states with all these other bills coming will be screwed.

And that carries over to Pixar as well. Newsweek shared this – “Pixar staff say Disney is censoring LGBT scenes after backlash against CEO Bob Chapek”. Here’s an excerpt, but seriously go read Newsweek’s full post.

Pixar staff have spoken out against Disney allegedly censoring same-sex stories in a continuing row over the company’s response to recently passed legislation in Florida known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. .

Employees of the animation giant released a statement, per Varietyclaiming that corporate executives at their parent company have demanded cuts and changes to “nearly all overtly gay moments of affection…regardless of when there are protests from the creative teams and management of Pixars”.

In the statement, which is attributed to Pixar’s “LGBTQIA+ employees and their allies,” the group wrote, “At Pixar, we have personally witnessed great stories, full of diverse characters, coming back from the corporate critics of Disney razed to smithereens what they once were.

Every student deserves to be seen, and every student deserves an education that prepares them for health and success, no matter who they are,” the statement concluded. “This should be the beginning of Disney’s advocacy efforts rather than the end.”

Well, Mr. Chapek, I leave you with the words of Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu and I want you to say it with me: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the ‘oppressor.” #DisneySayGay

Florida lawmakers spent nearly three and a half hours today debating and listening to the public on legislation that has been dubbed the Don’t Say Gay Bill. This gives parents more rights to be included in discussions about their child’s sexuality and gender identity. As Mike Vasilinda tells us, the bill is now one step away from the governors office.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq5mdsL0t50

Legislation prohibits teacher-led discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity. GOP state senator Jeff Brandes proposed an amendment to cover anything inappropriate”

“If the intent isn’t to marginalize anyone, let’s make sure it’s not,” Brandes told committee members.

It failed. two parents then talked about secret discussions at school with their children about their sexuality. Brandy Andrews said it could have happened to her tomboyish daughter.

“My daughter’s school had no problem calling me to say she violated the school dress code,” Andrews said, “but current guidelines at Flordia schools state that ‘They don’t have to call me and tell me she wants to be a boy.

Opponents argued that they knew they were gay from an early age.

“Since before kindergarten,” said one commenter.

Port Orange teacher Tamara Parker called the bill vague.

“I worked to bond with my parents in my class, and that’s not it,” she told the committee.

The Christian Family Coalition Florida was asked if they thought the discussion might

“make someone gay?” asked Sen. Jason Pizzo (D-Miami).

Anthony Verdugo, founder of the Christian Family Coalition Florida responded, “Kindergarteners should hear that there are forty-seven different sexual preferences, or a hundred different sexual identities.”

Unlike previous hearings, the audience had almost an hour and a half to speak today, and that still wasn’t enough time for everyone.

During the debate, Senator Jason Pizzo pointedly asked “why are we picking on people?”

Godfather Dennis Baxley (R-Ocala) responded.

“And I believe it’s imperative, if we love kids, that we put parents in the driver’s seat.”

Outside of Equality Florida, supporters have regrouped.

The bill is now before the full Senate.

LAS VEGAS — A battle to get a school voucher question before Nevada voters return to state court, with a lawsuit seeking to block the state’s top election official from putting action on the ballots that seek to allow parents to use state money to pay private tuition.
Two well-known senior officials of the Rogers Philanthropic Foundation — President Beverly Rogers and CEO Rory Reid — filed lawsuits on Tuesday seeking to stop the Education Freedom PAC from trying to collect the nearly 141,000 voter signatures needed to put two initiatives on the 2022 election.
A measure would amend the state constitution to create an “educational savings account” allowing students in kindergarten through 12 to attend schools “and educational programs other than public schools.”
The other would require state legislators to pass a good-type program with the same effect.
Education freedom officials, including its leader, Erin Phillips, did not immediately respond to messages on Thursday seeking comment on the legal challenge.
Phillips, co-founder and president of advocacy organization Power2Parent, told the Nevada Independent that litigation was expected of “those who want to protect the status quo” and would not stop her group’s efforts.
“We have confidence in the language and it’s clear that the people of Nevada are ready for a fundamental shift in our approach to education,” she said.
The legal challenges were filed in Carson City District Court against Republican Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske. They are asking a judge to block the petition and proposed initiative as flawed and misleading.
“The description of the effect misleadingly fails to disclose that any funding earmarked for the contemplated program would inevitably … (lead to) a deterioration of the Nevada public school system,” a lawsuit said.
“Let’s be clear, we’re not talking about school choice, we’re talking about the school’s choice to reject students because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, religious affiliation…or because they need additional resources to be successful,” Rogers said. in a report. “We support public schools because they serve all students.”
Nevada’s K-12 schools have long been at or near the bottom of the national rankings in spending per student, class size, and student achievement. State lawmakers were told in March 2021 that it would cost about $800 million in new spending just to meet national student-teacher ratios.
The Las Vegas-based foundation was started by Jim Rogers, the former media mogul and University Chancellor of Nevada, and his wife, Beverly Rogers. He supports a political organization called Educate Nevada Now.
He said the initiatives could divert an additional $300 million a year from public schools to private schools, homeschooled parents or other expenses.
“Our public schools are grossly underfunded,” Reid said in the statement, “and this effort…will only make matters worse.”

A new Gallup poll has found that the number of adults identifying as LGBTQ has risen from 5.6% of the adult US population, measured in 2020, to 7.1% today. That’s almost double the percentage since Gallup began measuring people who identify as something other than heterosexual in 2012.

Unsurprisingly, this increase is driven by Gen Z, where one in five (21%) identify as LGBTQ. It is also not surprising that the vast majority of them consider themselves to be bisexual. As shown in the graph below, the percentage decreases with each previous generation.

As I wrote in my book Meet Generation Z, it is a generation marked by sexual fluidity. The increase in the number of those embracing something other than a purely heterosexual identity is less a change in actual sexual orientation than a new openness to all things sexual. Again, the vast majority would claim to be bisexual, not purely gay.

Why does this happen?

Culture is best identified as both the world we are born into and the world that is born within us. Those in Generation Z who have now entered adulthood – which Gallup counts as those born between 1997 and 2003 – would have been between the ages of 12 and 18 when the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in 2015 and the former Olympian became Reality TV star Bruce Jenner very publicly became Caitlyn Jenner.

Due to this kind of cultural background, Generation Z has become sexually and relationally amorphous. It is doubtful that 21% are truly bisexual. what they are is really open. There is a difference. For many, saying you’re bisexual – even if you’ve never engaged in homoerotic behavior – is the ideologically correct thing to say. Sexual fluidity is the refusal of the homosexual or heterosexual label, even of the masculine or feminine label. The idea is that all labels are repressive. Sexuality should be free from restriction and allowed to follow its desire, moment by moment, relationship by relationship, feeling by feeling.

As more Gen Zers enter adulthood, expect the percentages of those who identify as something other than straight to climb even higher, and again fueled by a growing number of even younger members of Gen Z entering adulthood. But don’t read into these findings that our growing cultural tolerance is finally allowing the true size of the LGBTQ community to come into focus. Instead, read in the results of the Gallup poll and other similar polls to come that our post-Christian world and its individualistic amoral acceptance of all sexual choices,

…gave birth to its first generation.

As the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic forces people around the world to work from home, there seems to be an urgent need to reflect on what “home” represents and means to different individuals. The way people experience their homes is not just shaped by where they live and with whom they live; it is mediated by their gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality and marital status.

Singapore at Home: Life across Lines is an anthology exploring how home is felt, constructed and negotiated through 21 short stories of varying lengths. These fictional worlds feature characters from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in the multicultural Republic of Singapore. Edited by Pallavi Narayan and Iman Fahim Hameed, the book grew out of an “Ungender Home” writing workshop in 2018.

One of the promising stories is “Her Father’s Business” by Ken Lye which scratches beneath the surface of family unity and exposes the violence that awaits those who challenge the patriarchal status quo. When Ling’s academic success is celebrated by her mother, her father sees no reason to rejoice. He says, “She’s just a girl. She’s going to marry out of the family anyway. The parental obsession with marriage as a milestone recurs in Surinder Kaur’s story “Papaji’s Desire”. Daljit’s parents want her to marry a Punjabi man, but none of the matches arranged by them are suitable for her. She is happy to live alone but her mother thinks she should get married because “children are the greatest joy in a woman’s life”.

Can we feel at home without being rooted in a particular place? What is the relationship between feeling and memory? Does a house cease to be home when the people who make it warm and welcoming one day die? When does a place become a home away from home? This book raises such questions to ponder, so it may be a good idea to linger over the pages instead of reading it quickly from cover to cover.

Azeena Badarudeen’s story “A Bold Crossover (The ABC of a New Beginning)” revolves around Alyna, who seeks to establish emotional independence from her mother by purchasing her own apartment. Her upbringing in New York gave her the courage to make this decision after returning to Singapore. In a way, she resembles Daljit, whose ideas are influenced by her upbringing in Toronto. Being away from home for a short time causes them to look at their own situation from a new perspective. They become aware of possibilities that seemed out of reach not so long ago. Daljit and Alyna are free to make choices that were unavailable to their mothers. However, there are consequences that come with these decisions that they cannot escape.

Robert Marshall, founder of I Am Man Inc., is not only an advocate for male sexual assault victims, but also a survivor himself. Marshall spoke with The Root about how he used his story to empower other survivors to seek wellness and how his next delivered, Echoes, explores more intimately the stories of survivors and ways to overcome the effects of trauma.

Marshall, speaker, male empowerment coach, had introduced himself to his family and community to share his experience. Contrary to the negativity he expected, he was overwhelmed by the response from men from all walks of life who had shared his trauma.

The Root found Marshall’s experience with sexual abuse devastating. That it started so early in his childhood made us wonder, how has it affected him throughout his years?

“I’ve had nine sex offenders in my life. I started getting sexually treated from the age of four until I was almost 19 years old. For a long time, I thought it was my fault. I thought something was wrong with me. It never really crossed my mind that I never had the chance to choose who I wanted to be what I wanted to be. He was chosen for me.

I started sharing my story of sexual abuse and was very nervous at first, but I really felt like I had to be totally honest. I didn’t think it would take well. When I started sharing, I started getting this overwhelming response from men from all walks of life. Everyone from different races, different cultures, sexual orientation, it was just, that, it was just starting to come out of the floodgates,” Marshall said.

We asked Marshall why he was hesitant at first to share his story publicly and why other survivors might be reluctant to talk about their experiences.

“I didn’t feel like it was going to be okay. I didn’t feel it suited the religious community. I didn’t feel like it would fit in an urban hip-hop community because it doesn’t speak to toxic unrealistic and unhealthy definitions of masculinity and manliness.

I was afraid, you know, of embarrassing my wife and her family. I was also scared of what my kids would encounter, because once I posted here, it is what it is. You can’t decide who does what with this information and how they can return it, or what would be said. I wanted to protect my family and was really encouraged by my wife. She was my biggest fan. She was the one in the corner saying, you know, ‘You have to do this,'” Marshall said.

Along with her journey to sharing her story, Marshall noted that most people in communities of color tend not to talk about their traumas in part because it’s hard to get someone convicted of sexual assault. Men are especially reluctant to speak up or even tell someone about their experience because of shame, Marshall found.

“Not everyone has been sexually abused by a man. Some of them have been abused by babysitters or cousins, family friends, girlfriends, and it has touched them. men are afraid to speak out because they are afraid of being seen as gay,” Marshall said.

This fear of talking is what made him start I am an Inc man. As the #MeToo Movement spotlighting resources that female victims of sexual assault can use, Marshall noticed that male survivors had almost nowhere to turn.

I Am Man Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a safe space for male survivors of sexual assault by advocating, educating and empowering men to take back the power to choose who they want to be, according to the echoes Press release. Marshall’s first event for male survivors of sexual assault drew 92 men. Marshall said he then realized there was a real problem.

We wanted Marshall to describe his work with the organization; what they are doing to support survivors and the demographics of men who seek support from I Am Man Inc.

“My specific role and what we do, because we are not therapists, is to inspire, encourage and empower men to begin their journey to wholeness. When a man experiences sexual trauma, uh, scientifically, it changes them. It literally changes different elements of the person in general. What we’re doing is we’re creating safe spaces for them to give them the opportunity to start realizing, “Hey, that’s what I’ve been through. Most men don’t say anything because they don’t realize what they’ve been through is sexual abuse or sexual trauma.

We really do in-depth work through programs or resources through books and programs, helping them dig deeper into this. We can provide frameworks, forums, conversations to empower men to choose who they want to be and not live by unhealthy toxic definitions [of masculinity] that don’t serve them,” Marshall said.

Statistics found 1 of 6 men have been sexually assaulted. About 14% of these men had experienced sexual assault before the age of 18, the US Centers for Disease Control reported.

Through outreach and investigations, Marshall found that most of the survivors he met were heterosexual black men between the ages of 40 and 60. He also noted that men are less likely to report their incidents to the police, but men of color even more so because of the ongoing battle. against police brutality and mass incarceration. Moreover, their experiences translate into who they are in relationships.

“There are a lot of men who have trust issues, who have relationship issues and they have confided that often they have these issues because they have been sexually abused and have never told anyone about it. Or they have commitment issues because they are scared Even performing certain sexual acts with their partners they have a problem with that because they have been through sexual abuse or a traumatic sexual experience and never have anything said,” Marshall said.

The Root asked Marshall how he documented the stories of survivors to organize the echoes project and her plans after the book’s release to continue the effort to connect survivors to resources.

Marshall said his next book, echoesaims to give hope to men who still feel trapped by their current or past abuse, via press release. echoes is also an anthology project to humanize the experiences of male survivors and provide a framework to better understand the layers of sexual violence.

“As I started to write my story, I realized it would be very selfish of me to just include my story as I watched a sea of black men, white men, Hispanic men , straight Asian men and trans men – everyone who had been through this they had been through. So what I did was I opened it up and said I wanted to use this opportunity, to create a platform where we can truly shed light on the effects of trauma and its impact on men.

This is where Echoes was born. We’ve had retirement weekends, or currently, Echoes is set to release on April 25th. We are also working on a documentary to be released before the end of the year that will highlight the lived experiences of male survivors of sexual trauma from all walks of life.

I can’t even tell you how many men call me, privately say, “It happened to me, but I can’t say anything.” They literally carry that to their graves, so the shame, the pain, the rejection, all of that builds up inside of them and eats them alive,” Marshall said.

Following the book’s release, Marshall is looking to host a March 11 event called the Survivor Circle in his hometown of Chicago, to celebrate survivors of sexual assault and those who have had the courage to share their stories in echoes.

Marshall’s message for survivors is to remember that what happened to them was not their fault, but what they can control is how they left their experience perform them.

“It is your responsibility to manage your integrity, your health. To do this, you sometimes have to accept excuses that you will never get. You’ll have to find the courage to start the journey to face the things that have bullied you in silence,” Marshall said. “We have to put aside the negative things that we face internally so that we can live and be free. Most men just exist. I believe that every man deserves the right to live.

Now CAMRA launches ‘diversity campaign’ to shed ‘pale masculine’ image: Real Ale group wants to attract more women, gay men and ethnic minorities

  • The group now asks members about sexual orientation, ethnicity and gender
  • The survey also asks beer lovers to share their ‘experiences of inclusion and equality’
  • The MP said visiting a pub ‘is not a matter of whether you are male, female or black or white’

The real ale campaign launched a “diversity campaign” to shed its “pale, outdated, masculine image” and attract more ethnic minorities, women and gay people.

The group – famous for bearded middle-aged men – now asks members about their sexual orientation, ethnicity and gender identity “assigned to you at birth”.

The survey also asks beer lovers to share their “experiences of inclusion and equality” and whether they think CAMRA is diverse enough.

The survey is running until February 14, with CAMRA saying it will use the feedback to inform how it is handling the organization and its events.

The survey is running until February 14, with CAMRA saying it will use the feedback to inform how it is handling the organization and its events.

Tory MP Bob Blackman told The Sun: ‘All sorts of things like drinking good beer. It’s not about whether you’re male, female, black or white.

Mike Wood, a fellow Tory and chairman of the Parliament pub group, said: ‘Like thousands of people across the country, I met my wife in a pub.

‘A fussy image is not good. The more people who contact and bring to the pub, the better.

CAMRA started in 1971 and has recently expanded its remit to campaign for pubs as well as real ale.

Its Vice President Abigail Newton said: “We want everyone to feel welcome and safe at CAMRA.

“We need to regularly review the effectiveness of our approach and policies, to assess our performance and make improvements where necessary.

“I am extremely proud to be involved in this review and encourage anyone – whether a member of CAMRA or not – who has had an interaction with the Campaign to share their views and experiences.

“Only by having a say can real change be made.”

It came as the group criticized the way Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, had gone about implementing tax cuts to help the pubs industry.

New beer duty reductions offer a lower rate for draft beer and cider to encourage people to drink and support local pubs and other licensed venues.

However, the tax relief only applies to beer and cider served in containers of 40 liters or more, which excludes many small independent brewers in the country.

The European Parliament adopts its position on the proposed law on digital services | Allen & Overy LLP https://ivideosgratis.org/the-european-parliament-adopts-its-position-on-the-proposed-law-on-digital-services-allen-overy-llp/ Mon, 31 Jan 2022 19:02:30 +0000 https://ivideosgratis.org/the-european-parliament-adopts-its-position-on-the-proposed-law-on-digital-services-allen-overy-llp/ The DSA aims to modernize and establish a uniform EU-wide framework on the treatment of illegal or potentially harmful content online, the liability of online intermediaries for third party content, the protection of users’ fundamental rights online and reducing information asymmetries between online intermediaries and their users. The DSA aims to modernize and establish a uniform EU-wide framework on the treatment of illegal or potentially harmful content online, the liability of online intermediaries for third party content, the protection of users’ fundamental rights online and reducing information asymmetries between online intermediaries and their users. You can read key aspects of the European Commission’s proposal for DSA, published on December 15, 2020, in our blogs here and here.

Compared to the European Commission’s proposal, the main amendments introduced by the European Parliament are as follows:

  • targeting or amplification techniques that process, reveal or infer the personal data of minors and vulnerable groups, as well as special categories of data as defined by Article 9 of the GDPR (for example, personal data relating to political beliefs, religion or sexual orientation), are prohibited;
  • extend provisions that impose additional disclosure and transparency requirements for targeted advertising, including in relation to informing users of digital services about how their data will be monetised. The amendments will require online platforms to ensure that recipients of their services can opt out or withdraw consent for targeted ads in a way that is no more difficult or time-consuming than giving consent. Withholding consent to the processing of personal data for advertising purposes must not result in disabling access to Platform functionality and alternative access options (including no-tracking options) must be fair and reasonable;
  • users of digital services and the organizations that represent them must be able to seek compensation for any direct damage or loss resulting from the platforms’ failure to comply with their due diligence obligations;
  • intermediary service providers are not permitted to use deception or nudge techniques to influence user behavior through “dark patterns”. New DSA provisions prohibit vendors from giving visual visibility to any of the consent options and repeatedly requesting consent to data processing where consent has previously been withheld (including through the use of pop-ups );
  • extend the additional obligations to very large online platforms. For example, when carrying out mandatory risk assessments and implementing risk mitigation measures, these providers will need to consider fundamental rights. There are strict requirements for independent audits (e.g. to avoid auditor bias or dependency), ensuring transparency of ‘recommendation systems’ (the algorithms that determine what users see) and providing users at least one option that is not based on profiling; and
  • the terms and conditions of intermediary service providers must be fair, non-discriminatory and transparent, respect fundamental human rights and freedoms and be available in the language of the Member State to which the service is directed. These terms and conditions must be stated in clear and unambiguous terms and include information about all policies, procedures, measures and tools used for content moderation, including algorithmic decision-making, human review and the right to terminate the service. These terms and conditions should be supplemented by a concise and easily readable summary of the key elements. Conditions that do not comply with these requirements do not bind the recipients of the services.

Negotiations between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU to agree the text of the DSA should follow. The Council of the EU adopted its position on the DSA on 25 November 2021. You can read a summary of the Council’s position, prepared by Allen & Overy.
