From King County Attorney’s Officefour West Seattle cases in which charges were recently filed:

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF FIREARMS: 26 years Antonio E. Ortiz of West Seattle was already wanted on a half-million dollar warrant for theft and other charges when he was arrested for it. Police who knew he was the subject of the warrant spotted him in the Westwood area on September 10, driving a red BMW near Westwood Village. They followed him to the Roxbury Safeway gas station. The police converged on him and took him into custody. Inside the car, in the front passenger seat, according to court documents, they then found a “Glock handgun with a high-capacity drum magazine.” Turns out it was stolen from Auburn. Ortiz was not permitted to possess a firearm, stolen or not, as he has a robbery conviction on his record. So a first-degree unlawful possession of firearms charge was added to what he already faced, and 13 days after his arrest, Ortiz remains in jail, bail set at $610,000.

ANOTHER CASE OF WEAPON POSSESSION: Earlier this week we reported that police arrested a 28-year-old man, after he was found in a car on Harbor Island with a handgun, although he is not allowed to own one as he is a convicted felon. Now John J. Kyllo of North Seattle is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm in the first degree. Court documents say he was found in the wrecked car last Sunday, unconscious, with the Ruger .45 caliber handgun loaded in his belt. Turns out it was stolen from Tacoma. Kyllo has six felony convictions on his record, including robbery, burglary and failure to register as a sex offender. King County jail records show his bail was set at $10,000 and he was released the day after his arrest.

STOLEN CAR: A car theft at Admiral is among the charges against a 26-year-old woman. Prosecutors say Destiny R. Sweeney of Bothell admitted driving a stolen Nissan Sentra in the 2600 block of the 42nd SW between September 11 and 13. Court documents say that’s what happened: On September 14, state corrections officers noticed the car, plateless, in South Seattle, and tried to stop it. Instead, he sped up. They briefly lost it but found it, unoccupied, nearby, and soon found the woman they had seen driving it, identified as Sweeney. She has a record including convictions for theft and is now charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and attempted escape. Nine days after her arrest, she remains in the King County jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.

HEIST: 35 years Darius J.Thomas of South Seattle is charged with first-degree burglary for a Sept. 1 incident at a home in Olson Place. Prosecutors say he broke down the door of the house and assaulted a 16-year-old boy, a friend of Thomas’s son, who had been there shortly before. Thomas also allegedly held the victim at knifepoint and made threats. Court documents say he has a drug trafficking conviction and four domestic violence protection orders. He was not in custody when the charge was filed and prison records show he has not yet been arrested.
